Mike Emanuel, Fox’s chief congressional correspondent, faces a demanding work schedule in perhaps the most contentious and divisive political environment in modern American history. In the midst of this, he finds solace through prayer and a deep faith in God.

Emanuel grew up in the Greek Orthodox Church and as a young person, attended Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Westfield, New Jersey, where a spiritual focus became essential in his life.

“It’s very tense times in our American politics and so I just try to take a breath and say a little prayer throughout the course of my day,” he told Faithwire. “It doesn’t have to be anything too formal, but it really makes me feel calm and tranquil and peaceful; it’s a reminder of where I come from and what’s important in my life.”

He said he often turns to a prayer used in his tradition known as the “Jesus Prayer,” a simple, one-sentence invocation:

The prayer is: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”

The prayer is inspired by Jesus’ instruction in Matthew 6:7-8, when he told his disciples to be brief when they pray. Emanuel says the prayer is good for his soul.

“It helps me clear my head and stay grounded and focus on the mission at hand, which is doing the news as fairly and accurately as possible and kind of tuning out some of the other noise,” he explained. “It helps give me some peace in the middle of chaotic times and I’m grateful for it. It’s such a blessing in my life.”

Emanuel is thankful to God for his career. “It’s a great reminder that if you have a dream and you’re willing to work really, really hard for it, great things are possible in this country,” he told Faithwire.

“I’m certainly a living example of that,” he added, “and feel so blessed and so grateful.”

Emanuel wants to pass his faith legacy on to his children. He and his wife, Evangeline, and their two children, attend church together.
