Does God still heal miraculously today?

Jesus demonstrated he is the Son of God and he is God by performing powerful miracles throughout his ministry. I don’t know of any other religious figure who could walk on water, command the wind and the waves, heal people born blind, feed 5,000 with a few loaves and fishes, and raise the dead.

In Luke 7, some men sent by John the Baptist came and asked Jesus if he was the Messiah, the one they had been waiting for, and he said:

“Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them.”

The miracles testified to Jesus’ authority, that he was the promised Messiah. The miracles fulfilled the prophecies about him in the Old Testament. He also healed because of his compassion and he healed in response to faith.

But what would happen after he left? What if there were no more miracles after Jesus ascended to heaven? But that’s not what happened. The miracles didn’t stop. They continued through his disciples – and they continue to this day!

This is a fulfillment of a remarkable statement Jesus made before he left us. He said in John 14, “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.”

When Jesus walked the earth, he was limited to one physical body through which he performed miracles. But after he left, he sent the Holy Spirit to live within all who follow him, and that allows his body to keep performing miracles throughout the world.

He is as alive today as He ever was. And He is still in a sense walking the earth performing miracles through your life and my life.

Example of miracles connected with Peter

When Peter traveled around the churches in Judea and Samaria he happened to visit the town of Lydda, which is near Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion airport.

“Now as Peter went here and there among them all, he came down also to the saints who lived at Lydda. There he found a man named Aeneas, bedridden for eight years, who was paralyzed.”

Imagine being paralyzed, not able to leave your bed for eight years! There were no wheelchairs to aid mobility for the disabled. After eight long years that bed probably felt as hard as a rock beneath him. His disease was entirely incurable.

Remember Jesus healed a paralyzed man in Mark 2 who was let down through the roof by four friends. Jesus not only healed his body but also forgave his sins. In John 5 Jesus healed a paralyzed man who sat near the pool of Bethesda for 38 years.

Peter said Aeneas, “’Jesus Christ heals you; rise and make your bed.’ And immediately he rose. And all the residents of Lydda and Sharon saw him, and they turned to the Lord.”

It’s important to see Peter did not heal the paralyzed man. Peter never claimed to heal anybody. But he said, “Jesus Christ heals you.” Peter was the instrument of his healing power, just as you and I can be instruments of Jesus’ healing power.

Notice that Peter uttered an amazingly faith-filled prayer: “Jesus heals you, get up and make your bed.” I have to admit my prayers are usually not that bold. I ask for healing, believing God has the power to do anything, but I usually don’t declare the healing with such boldness or tell someone in a wheelchair to get out of the wheelchair.

The Scripture teaches there is power in the spoken word of faith. But there are some who carry this to extremes, urging people to speak by faith for whatever they want, the so-called “name it and claim it” movement within Christianity.

So you have some people praying about making a lot of money or driving a Ferrari or having an oceanfront home. An extension of this is to tell people to visualize what they desire, which veers off into the never-never land of metaphysics.

According to Pastor Chuck Smith, “The difference is that when Peter or Paul spoke a word of faith, the Holy Spirit had already revealed to them what the Spirit wanted to do. You and I cannot direct the work of God. They are God’s works; they always begin with him.”

“There may be times when God will direct you to speak a word of faith to someone and have them act upon that word of faith.”

We should find the balance between two extremes, between those who say God never does miraculous healing today and those who say that he always heals – if you have enough faith.

We know that Christians get sick and die. Some of God’s best, faith-filled people go thru periods of illness and pain even when they are at the very center of God’s will.

Not everyone we pray for has a miraculous cure, so this is within God’s control and His sovereignty. Healing of the body is at best temporary, because each of us will pass away at some point.

Three ways God heals

Dr. Harold Sala speaks of three ways God brings healing. First, he can heal supernaturally, miraculously, in only ways he can heal. Secondly, he works thru doctors and medical science, what Dr. Sala calls integrative healing.

But what if you’ve prayed for healing, you’ve been to doctors, tried everything and still you wait and you think, “Why doesn’t he heal me or my loved one?” If you have waited for a long while and you don’t understand God’s character, you may become discouraged, thrown off track in your faith.

Ultimately, we have to rest in God’s character, that He is good all the time, He has his own plan and He knows what is best for our lives. I won’t have all the answers this side of heaven.

But there is a third way God heals, according to Dr. Sala. He heals redemptively, by using your illness or disability to bless the lives of others around you, as you reveal to them the reflection of Jesus shining through your countenance, even in the midst of affliction.

joniDr. Sala says the living embodiment of redemptive healing is Joni Eareckson, who was paralyzed from the neck down after a diving accident when she was a teenager. She can say now there are a million reasons she is grateful God did not heal her of her paralysis when she was a teenager.

She says he affliction “stretched her hope, made her know Jesus better, helped her long for truth, led her to repentance of sin, goaded her to give thanks in times of sorrow, increased her faith, and strengthened her character.”

She says, “Being in this wheelchair has meant knowing God better, feeling His pleasure every day.” She says, “If this doesn’t qualify as a miracle in your book, then I prefer my book to yours.”

Yes, God still works in miraculous ways today. Yes, there is power through faith. And he also heals redemptively, by deepening your faith in Him.

I don’t want to be in the position of limiting God. He is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above all that we ask or think. Jesus can heal you now and save you now as well as if you met him in person, walking along the beach. Jesus is the today as He was yesterday.

The physical miracles in Scripture are also a picture of the spiritual miracle that God wants to perform in everyone. The cool thing is the healing of the spirit is eternal and that is what God really wants. He wants your spirit healed, made alive, and enjoying his presence forever.

There was an awesome result from this miracle. All who lived in Lydda and a neighboring town saw Aeneas walking around, testifying about what Jesus had done, and they believed!

One part of this story I find humorous is Peter instructing Aeneas to get up and make his bed. If I had been paralyzed for eight years, the last thing I would want to do if I had just been healed is to get up and make the bed.

On the one hand it confirmed he really had been healed. But I just wonder if that detail was placed there for the parents of modern teens. It’s a very handy verse to use first thing in the morning: Arise and make your bed!

Modern miracle — healing a paralyzed woman

Is Jesus still healing paralyzed people today? Paul Ai, the founder of Vision Outreach International,

Paul and Ruth Ai
Paul and Ruth Ai

was visiting a church in Texas with his wife, Ruth, in 2014.

A woman came to the service, Marie Cribbs, who had been in a wheelchair for four years, unable to walk, due to complications of diabetes, two bouts of breast cancer with chemo, and severe arthritis.

Bill & Marie Cribbs

Her whole body degenerated and her husband Bill had become her caregiver. Marie says. “I couldn’t lift my arms or my legs or do anything. My husband had to take care of everything. I was in extreme pain.”

Due to her illness and disability, Marie had only been to church 10 times in the previous four years. But she went to the evening service when Paul Ai was the guest speaker.

After they arrived, her husband rolled her wheelchair past Paul and Ruth Ai. Marie says she felt an intense burning in her back when she rolled by Paul and Ruth.

At the end of Paul’s talk, he called up anyone who needed prayer for healing. Both Paul and his wife Ruth prayed for her.

Marie says Pastor Paul commanded all her cells and her legs to align with the Holy Spirit. Then Ruth extended her hand to Marie, telling her to stand up. Now that’s a bold prayer!

Immediately, Marie stood up and started walking! The entire church erupted in applause and shouts of Hallelujah – as Marie walked around the perimeter of the room.

In Acts 9, Peter’s next miracle happened in Joppa. “Now there was in Joppa a disciple named Tabitha, which, translated, means Dorcas. She was full of good works and acts of charity. In those days she became ill and died, and when they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room. Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, hearing that Peter was there, sent two men to him, urging him, “Please come to us without delay.” So Peter rose and went with them. And when he arrived, they took him to the upper room. All the widows stood beside him weeping and showing tunics and other garments that Dorcas made while she was with them.”

So Dorcas blessed people with her sewing, you could say she had a sanctified needle. This is a woman who exuded the love of Christ and was always finding ways to help people and give gifts to people.

Dorcas was deeply loved, and apparently developed an illness and died. And her friends were gathered around Dorcas, mourning for her. They were showing each other clothing she made for them.

Now Peter had never been involved in raising someone from the dead. In the realm of miracles, this would stretch anyone’s faith.

“Peter put them all outside, and knelt down and prayed; and turning to the body he said, ‘Tabitha, arise.’ And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up. And he gave her his hand and raised her up. Then calling the saints and widows, he presented her alive. And it became known throughout all Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. And he stayed in Joppa for many days with one Simon, a tanner.”

Through God’s resurrection power, this woman was restored to life and her ministry of good works. And the word about this miracle spread and many more believed in the power of Jesus.

Contemporary miracle, man raised from the dead

Are people still being raised from the dead today? In, 2006, an auto mechanic, Jeff Markin, 53, walked

Jeff Markin

into the emergency room at a hospital in Florida and collapsed from a massive heart attack.

His heart stopped. A medical team worked on Jeff for over 40 minutes in the emergency room and then declared him dead.

A nurse was preparing Jeff’s body to be taken to the morgue and there happened to be a Christian doctor in the room, Dr. Chauncey Crandall. He said the Holy Spirit told him to ‘turn around and pray for that man.’

Dr. Chauncey Crandall
Dr. Chauncey Crandall

Dr. Crandall reported later, “There was no life in the man. His face and feet and arms were completely black with death and I sat next to his body and I prayed, ‘Lord, Father; how am I going to pray for this man? He’s dead. What can I do?’

All of a sudden, these words came out of his mouth, “Father, God, I cry out for the soul of this man if he does not know You as his Lord and Savior, please raise him from the dead right now in Jesus name.’”

A couple minutes later Dr. Crandall glanced over at the monitor and suddenly a heartbeat showed up. It was a perfect beat, a normal beat; and then after a couple more minutes, Jeff ‘s fingers and toes started moving and then he began mumbling words.

There was a nurse in the room who wasn’t a believer — and she screamed out and said ‘Doctor Crandall, what did you do with this patient?’ And he said, ‘All I did was cry out for his soul in Jesus name.’

They rushed Jeff back to ICU, and after a couple of days he woke up. Dr. Crandall visited him in ICU and asked Jeff if he was conscious of anything or remembered anything after the heart attack.

Jeff said, “Doctor Crandall, it’s the most amazing thing. I was in a dark room and there was no light. It was complete darkness and I was afraid.” Dr. Crandall told him it may have been a foretaste of hell.

Dr. Crandall explained that if he would place his faith in Jesus, he would never have to fear death or hell again.

Then Dr. Crandall reached out and held his hand and Jeff accepted Christ as his Savior with tears rolling down from his eyes. Yes, Jesus still raises people from the dead. God is still doing miracles, just as He did through Jesus and His disciples.

The greatest miracle of all is that He can transform your life from the inside out, if you put your faith and trust in Him.

  1. Hi, i am very inspired and encouraged to know God still heals miraculously.
But perhaps i have very little faith. My mum has cancer and is at advanced stage. Doctor said she has only days or weeks to survive. Seeing her going thru the painful process of being bitten unmercifully by these cells ….pain us…, hurt us… and we are just so helpless… And all we can do to ease her pain is to inject painkillers to relieve her… But these are temporal …. My mum was baptised after she was discharged from hospital. We brought her home to gave her pilliative care at home. We tried our best to give her the best care, to make her as comfortable as possible, to go with her flow…. Day by day she is dried up to bones by the cruel, wicked cells.
We started with great faith… and that science cannot help… But God can…. till now. Our faith is diminishing…. We do nor know how to pray powerfully…was it becaz I am not spiritual.. Thus God turn a deaf ear?how to pray??? We can only stand aside and watch our mum suffer…. Is God present? Why is God not delivering her? Why is God not healing her??? Is God bias? Does God have His favourites??? We are discouraged. We hope there is a miracle… But there isnt. Our prayer from God to heal miraculously to God take her Home so she could rest with Him… From believing in God we have the victory to feeling so defeated by the disease. Words cannot describe.. our deepest pain. It hurts deeply to see my mum suffering … So, only when Holy Spirit tell you what to do, then there will be miracle healing??? Be it pain or fear…. They are lonely … Only the one in it will have to go thru it herself…. .. My only consolation is eventually, she will be resting comfortably in God’s arms in Heaven.
Many happenings, we simply cannot fanthom God’s way n thoughts…. i guess we just have to let it be… we cannot play God…

  2. I seldom read Christian magazines but, somehow, yesterday, perhaps by the prompting of the Holy Spirit, I wanted to read a Christian magazine, and was led to visit Christian Post website and the title of the article “Does God still heal miraculously today?” caught my attention. God does heal miraculously today but many people do not believe or want to accept that it is also God’s prerogative not to heal.

If God does not heal, there must be a good reason or purpose that we do not know now but perhaps later. Take for example King Hezekiah who was “sick unto death.” (2 Kings 20:1) He wept and prayed before God: “I beseech Thee, O LORD, remember now how I have walked before Thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in Thy sight.” And Hezekiah wept sore. (2 Kings 20:3) Why should God want to take him away? God could see ahead how Hezekiah would, not long after he was healed, show off all his wealth and treasures to the ambassadors of the king of Babylon who came to Hezekiah with a letter and a present after he heard he was sick. God could see ahead Hezekiah would produce sons who would turn away from Him – his son Manasseh who succeeded him became a most wicked and idolatrous king. If he had died then (that is, when God wanted to take him away), he would have an unblemished record and a good account to give to Him in that day, and not have sons who departed from God.

Let it not be misunderstood that those who have been healed may not become better persons but, sad to say, majority of the cases of people who have been healed are not found following the Lord, loving Him, and serving Him. The Lord Himself healed so many of their sicknesses and diseases but it is not stated in the Bible all of them followed Him and glorified Him. Ten lepers were cured and “one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.” (Luke 17:15, 16) It is most likely the other nine lepers who were cured did not know Him as their Lord and Saviour. I know how the Lord felt when He saw the ingratitude of those who were healed for I also give free medical consultations and have cured so many but seen so few grateful for being healed.

A pastor once said after he heard a testimony of healing at a Bible study group that salvation is more important than healing. A person is healed but still not saved (still in his sins). He has been deceived by the Devil who transforms himself into an angel of light and his ministers as ministers of righteousness. (2 Corinthians 11:13-15)

If anyone has truly experienced the love of Christ, and loves Him, he will not become unhappy with Him but willing to say, “Thy will be done.”

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.” (1 John 4:18)
