Since the October 7th Hamas attack on Israel, antisemitic incidents in Australia have spiked 317%.
From October 2022 to September 2023 , Australia registered 495 anti-Jewish incidents, according to the Executive Council of Australian Jewry. The next year – immediately after the massacre of Israelis, there were 2,062 anti-Jewish incidents.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns called it “a massive escalation of antisemitic hate crime.”
The Hamas attack appears to have detonated the ugly Jew hating impulse lurking within humanity. Only 36 hours after the October 7th attacks, pro-Palestinians Australians formed a protest at the Sydney Opera House reportedly chanting, “Gas the Jews!” and “F–k the Jews!” They burned Israeli flags.
Stunningly, a pair of nurses at the Bankstown Hospital recently bragged online about killing Jewish patients!
“You have no idea how many Israeli haram (forbidden) dogs have come to this hospital, and hweep (making a sign of slitting his throat),” one man said on livestream. “I sent them to jahannam (Hell, in Arabic).”
Another nurse said on the same livestream that she refuses to treat Jews. “I would kill them,” she said, making a spitting gesture at him.
They spewed hate when they were supposed to be saving lives. The pair has been fired, and an investigation into patient records has been initiated, Australian news reported.
The hate speech caught on camera is only the latest of a long string of incidents in Australia. In addition to Jewish schools and synagogues, homes and small businesses of Jews have been targeted for arson, graffiti, vandalism and violence. Some hate-mongers even stamped swastikas on Australian currency.
In October 2023, a 44-year-old Jewish man in Sydney was called a “Jew dog” and assaulted in a public park by three males, sustaining a concussion and fractures to his spine, the Times of Israel reported.
In December 2024, the Addas Israel Synagogue in Melbourne was set on fire as Jews were praying there in the early morning. Masked men entered, poured out fuel and ignited it. Only one Jewish person was slightly injured, but the building was entirely destroyed.
On Jan. 11, red swastikas were spray-painted on a synagogue in Newton.
On the same day in Queenspark, antisemitic graffiti was painted on a house, five cars and a trailer.
Part of the problem, according to pro-Israeli Australian Nate Buzolic, is the “weak leadership in Australia that allows radical, hate-filled ideologies to run rampant on our streets.”
Muslim apologists say they’re only opposed to “Zionism,” but the graffiti is very specific; it’s the Jews they hate, Buzolic told CBN.
Where does the Jew-hating come from? The common perpetrators are Muslims and progressives (who have allied with the Muslims – see article). Progressives see all people of color as oppressed and whites as oppressors.
For their part, Muslims have Koranic texts, hadiths and some Muslim leaders that tell Muslims to hate Jews (and to a lesser extent, Christians)
However, contemporary Muslim scholars vary in their interpretations. Some emphasize peaceful coexistence and interfaith respect, while others interpret certain verses in a more confrontational, radicalized manner.
Also in January, Southern Sydney synagogue was spray-painted with pro-Hitler and pro-Palestine graffiti.
Tammy Reznik, a correspondent for the Jerusalem Post, says the whole tenor of the nation has changed since the Hamas massacre. She now hides her Jewishness when she walks the streets.
“I am dismayed at my unrecognizable Australia and angry to admit that I now think twice when leaving home wearing Jewish symbols,” Reznik wrote for the Australia/Israel & Jewish Affairs Council website.
