After signing an agreement to adhere to Liberty University’s doctrine and practice, and after passing the probation period of 90 days, Jonathan suddenly announced he was no longer Jonathan. He was Ellenore.
The Virginia-based Christian university fired Ellenore Zinski for transitioning in violation of the school’s policies aligning with Scripture in regard to marriage and gender identity.
For his part, Zinski says the university is violating federal law which bans discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender. Zinski sued in July with the help of the ACLU, according to the Christian Post.
Whose “right” will prevail – the right of a religious school to practice its doctrine free of government control, or the right of the federal government to enforce non-discrimination rules based on gender and sexual orientation?
“Ultimately, I think this case could make its way to the United States Supreme Court because this issue has not been addressed directly by them,” U.S. Attorney John Fishwick told WSET ABC 13.
Liberty asked a federal judge to dismiss the lawsuit brought by Zinski and the ACLU, calling it a sham lawsuit and an attempt to trap the university.
Zinski was hired at Liberty’s IT help desk in February 2023 after signing the doctrinal statement of the university. He pledged allegiance to the concept of God making man and woman different. But at the same time, he had already been taking hormone treatment for four months to change his gender.
“An individual applied to work for Liberty University under the pretense that he agreed with its Christian doctrine and mission statement – and signed off on that,” says Daniel Schmid, a lawyer for Liberty. “Every employee is required to sign a statement saying they agree with Liberty’s biblical position on sexuality and marriage and all manner of things.”
Zinski reportedly did a good job, but his staff position and interaction with the students provided a beachhead for anti-biblical beliefs inside the nation’s second largest Christian University.
For his part, Zinski describes himself as a “devout Christian” and says the University “should have grace” and not fire him. “Christianity has been so weaponized against the LGBTQ community, but there doesn’t need to be a conflict,” he said. “You can be transgender and Christian. I am.”
