Candidate’s view on free speech raises questions for some believers

Tim Walz, Kamala’s pick for VP, is a plain-speaking Midwesterner who loves hunting, Bruce Springsteen and the little guy.

But one area of concern for some believers is his position on free speech.

“There’s no guarantee to free speech on misinformation or hate speech, especially around our democracy,” he told MSNBC.

Calls to hem in free speech most frequently seem to result in crackdowns on Christians, who sound the alarm on trans surgeries, LGBTQ parenting, government overreach and Islamic violence.

In the United Kingdom, street preachers are being arrested frequently for “harassing” the public because they preach against sin. The Bible is not (yet) a banned book in the UK, but mainstream media narrative follows the hard left with its strong distaste for so-called Islamophobia and homophobia.

In Canada, extreme left Prime Minister Justin Trudeau froze bank accounts of anyone donating to truckers who protested Covid restrictions. Just this year, he arrested UK firebrand Tommy Robinson without charges while the patriot was giving speeches.

These measures are reminiscent of the former Soviet Union, where critics were sent to the Gulag, and in Nicaragua, where anti-Sandinista protesters weren’t tolerated.

The Gateway Pundit characterized the Minnesota governor’s statement on free speech a “declaration of war on the Constitution.” The First Amendment guarantees free speech in no uncertain terms.

Here are some questions for Walz and other candidates who espouse such views: Who defines “misinformation?” Does preaching against sin constitute “hate?” Will freedom of religion and freedom of conscious also be curtailed? Do the rights of Christians figure in to his plans of all the groups of people he wants to protect?
