Donald Trump credited God for saving his life when an assassin’s bullet grazed his ear on July 13 at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

“There was blood pouring everywhere, and yet in a certain way I felt very safe because I had God on my side,” Trump said in his RNC nomination acceptance speech yesterday.

Trump was speaking at a rally last Saturday when Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, clambered up a rooftop 400 feet away and fired off 6-8 rounds before being shot and killed by a Secret Service sniper.

The miracle occurred, Trump said, because right at the precise moment, he turned his head to look at a video screen behind him. Had he not turned his head, or had he turned it further, he’d be dead today.

“The assassin’s bullet would have hit its mark,” Trump said.

Sporting a rectangular bandage over his right ear on Thursday at the Republican National Convention, Trump appeared uncharacteristically subdued, many observed. Some said he looked humble, like a man who realizes he could have died.

“I’m not supposed to be here tonight,” he said.

He narrated that he heard a strong whizzing sound and felt an impact on his ear. Instinctively, he moved his hand up to his ear, and when he lowered his hand, he saw blood. He realized that he was being shot at, and hunkered down behind the podium as Secret Service personnel rushed in to cover him.

Trump said the second miracle of the assassination attempt was that people didn’t stampede as they normally would.

“The crowd was confused because they thought I was dead,” he said. “There was great, great sorrow. I was looking out and I could see that in their faces. I wanted to do something to let them know that I was ok. I raised my right arm, looked at the thousands and thousands of people that were breathlessly waiting and started shouting, Fight! Fight! Fight!

The president was spared, but a supporter was killed as he dove to shield his wife and two daughters from the spray of bullets. Two others were critically injured also.

“It was a providential moment,” he said. “I stand before you in this arena only by the grace of God.”
