When doctors inexplicably missed four-year-old Colton Burpo’s burst appendix, and the resulting infection nearly took his life, his father railed at God as Colton’s life seemed to slip away.
Pastor Todd Burpo found a small room in the hospital after Colton was taken into surgery, and he unloaded some raw emotions toward heaven. “Where are you God? Is this how you treat your pastors? Is it worth it to even serve you?” he shouted, as recounted in the New York Times bestseller “Heaven is for Real.”
After Colton’s surgery and a time in ICU, the fair-haired boy made a remarkable recovery. It wasn’t until four months later on a family car ride to South Dakota that Colton’s parents realized something very unusual happened to Colton as doctors fought to save his life.
Colton shared with his astonished parents that he left his body in the hospital and visited heaven, where he sat on Jesus’ lap and met departed family members, along with other remarkable details.
He watched his father praying for his life in the small room, a fact that even Todd’s wife, Sonya, didn’t know. Todd had confessed and repented of his “raw” attitude toward God in the hospital, but the realization that his son sat on Jesus’ lap in the midst of his anger melted his heart.
“I screamed at God when he was holding my kid and it was wrong,” he admits. “When I knew God had forgiven me for that, I knew it was okay to share it with other people.”
The throne room
Colton told his parents one of his favorite places in heaven was the throne room of God – with God seated on a huge throne, and Jesus enthroned on His right and the angel Gabriel on the Father’s left. “People ask Colton, ‘What does God’s face look like?’”
“Colton says, ‘His face is so big I could hardy see it.’” Todd notes that his son “has nothing to measure God by – he was just a little kid.” Colton estimated that God is so large, he could hold the world in His hands.
Everyone Colton saw in heaven had wings, except for Jesus. Colton described Michael, the archangel as the biggest of the angels — twice as tall as Todd.
“Heaven is for Real” has been on the New York Times bestseller list for months, with over six million copies sold. An illustrated children’s edition of the book came out in November. “There are more details and memories in the children’s book,” Todd notes. “It’s all first-person Colton and starts with him leaving the hospital.”
In heaven, Colton was taken under wing by his departed great-grandfather, a man he never met – who passed away when his father was only a boy. He also met a sister he never knew, who was miscarried by his mother.
“When people say Colton met his little sister, he’s quick to correct them. He says, “She was not my little sister; she was my big sister.’
“She was never born, but she aged to where she was Colton’s big sister,” Todd adds. This unnamed sister waits in heaven for the rest of her family to arrive, when they will delight in finally giving her a name.
It appeared to Colton that babies gradually age to their late twenties or thirties in heaven, while older people regain youthful bodies. “There is no death or dying in heaven,” Todd notes. “Colton’s memory is that you age to your prime and then you stop aging.” Colton’s great-grandfather appeared to be a man in his thirties, having reverted in age.
There are “gobs” of babies in heaven, according to Colton, but it remains unclear whether this is due to abortion or natural deaths. “The women in heaven – especially Mary – are involved with raising the kids,” he says. According to Colton, Mary, the mother of Jesus, has dark hair, brown eyes, and is a little taller than his mother. Mary had a dark sky blue sash and a light above her head. She seemed to be in her late twenties, like the other adults in heaven.
“Colton will tell you that King David and Samson were two of his favorite Bible characters he met in heaven. He always talks about how nice they were. David would show him around heaven and help him. He went to David a lot for help.”
The coming battle
Even though Colton never read the Book of Revelation, his description of a coming battle accurately reflect the events depicted in Scripture. “Colton says there’s going to be a war,” Todd notes. “He says ‘Jesus, the angels and the good people are going to fight the monsters and the bad guys.” He saw Jesus throw Satan into hell.
One day Colton asked his father, “Dad, why do I remember a dragon with seven heads and 10 crowns?”
Todd looked at his son in amazement and said, “Colton, whatever you saw and whatever John saw is the same thing.”
“Colton says, ‘Satan looks like an angel, but his light was extinguished a long time ago. They showed me where he used to have a throne in heaven.’”
One of Colton’s favorite activities in paradise was to attend a class taught by Jesus. “Jesus was his teacher and he had homework. We knew it had to be heaven because he hates homework down here,” Todd says with a laugh.
Some wonder how Colton could have seen so much in a short period. By Colton’s reckoning, he was only gone for three minutes from his earthly body. “Peter said that with God a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years is like a day. If you do the math, three minutes equals two years,” Todd notes.
“God operates outside of time and time doesn’t limit God,” he adds.
Todd showed his son countless artistic representations of Jesus before Colton decided on one that matched his memory of the Lord. The image that came closest was painted by a young prodigy named Akiane Kramarik, who had a powerful vision about Jesus as a child that led to her painting.
The beauty of His eyes
It may seem surprising to some that Colton and Akiane recall Jesus with blue-green eyes. “Colton says, ‘Dad, Jesus’ eyes are just so
pretty.’”
“Many attack Colton and say ‘Jesus was a Jew. He couldn’t have had blue eyes.’ However, the Bible doesn’t say Jesus was a Jew. His mother was Jewish, but he was born of God – the Son of God.”
Colton recalls that he could always hear people singing in heaven and one always feels God’s love everywhere. “Heaven is not a place where you stand in the choir and sing the whole time,” Todd notes. “It’s a place where we get to be completely fulfilled.”
Todd sympathizes with the skeptics who question his son’s remarkable story. “When my son first started sharing this I wondered how it could be true,” he admits. “I tried to come up with explanations for what he was giving me. I tried to dismiss or explain away what he was saying and I couldn’t.”
Colton’s detailed information about his great-grandfather, along with the specific location of Todd and his wife while Colton was in surgery, erased his doubts.
Despite the book’s enormous success, Todd would not choose to go through this experience again. “We didn’t ask for this,” he says. “Watching your child almost die – I don’t ever want to go through that again. I can’t tell you how awful that is. It was gut-wrenching.”
“This was done to us, not because we’re super-spiritual. Most of the things that happened were completely out of our control. It’s because of God that this happened.”
“If you look at the peace and hope people are finding because of the story, we can look back and say maybe God had a plan bigger than any of us could figure out at the time.”

Bri and I just read the book “Heaven is four Real” last month. We both loved it, it rang true

I do not need these events to believe in !GOD!
I need these event to show others what they need so they stop non believing!
Why? For some they do not have Faith!
Faith is like knowing and not knowing.
Faith is like for some they feel the air and breath even though they do not see it, touch it, smell it, taste it and they know it exists.
Faith is like not knowing what the Sun is out there that give us heat, light and life but we know little how it works but we know without it we are nothing.
Faith is knowing with little events and comparative events in subtle ways when you have the sensitivity to feel and discern you know there is something else out there besides you and I. They said there is no such thing as Ghost. Well! Now we have devices that can record the unusual and can communicate with spirits and demons but people still resist in believing a Higher Power exists.
I had some of these subtle things happened to me and GOD fulfills certain things we need so we hope to know the HIS subtle signs along the way to make the right choices in our lives.
For some…- they need the sky is falling and then the earth fall to the sky around them before they may start to believe.
-Then there are the ones that need 1,000,000 people they know around them float into Heaven have a big party and then sent back to Earth and then maybe they start believing.
-For other it takes much more as they are the ones that start believing when they wish for a 100 million dollars, receive it, spend it all and ask GOD for more and they do not receive their wish again and act with total unappreciative behavior.
-For the empirical believer see this show clip and it might help the non believer or the person who nick picking about everything but missing the whole point. As Colton Burpo has replied when he was asked what about all the other religions and his reply was “That GOD is in ALL the religions” Is all you need to know!!!
This what I believed into since I was an early adult contemplating what would a Superior Being would do. Remember HIS Works are strange to us so you must think in those terms if possible. Do not think from a human level as it is inadequate to understand.
Stay in tune to Nature and the signs are already there be more of an observer and the signs are all around us…

Jesus loves the little children and He loves grownups also. The first time I was up in heaven it was surprising to see women dancing. They were lovely, and I wished I could be part of it. Then Jesus came to me and ask me if I would like to dance. He opened His hands to dance with me and I was so shocked I said, “Jesus do you dance”? He laughed and said, “I created the dance”. Then we walzed around the floor. It was wonderful and so unexpected. Another time there was line dancing with Jesus at the head but the line was so long I couldn’t see the end. I have seen many other things God has planned for us when we finally are in heaven, dear ones. It’s wonderful to hear about the little ones meeting the Lord Jesus. We would experience more if we came with a childs heart that believes.
Oh, how I wish to visit Heaven even before my Glory Call. It would definitely revive and assure me now in my old age. I am 64 and still
have a lot more to do for His Kingdom on Earth. I need such visitation
inorder to refresh my pilgrimage here.

Dear Tom and Family,
I’m sure you have been getting plenty of mail and emails from people about “Heaven is for Real” and I wanted to take some time to one of those people. What happened to Colton and your family has touched me so much especially what has happened this year. Early this year I was diagnosed with Severe Ulcerative Colitis. We went through the same exact process, thinking it was just the flu. Me being 17, I like to think I’m more independent, so I blew it off my shoulders. About a month later, it took its toll. I was doing the same thing as Colton, not keeping anything in my body, dropped a numerous amount of weight and becoming dehydrated. Colton it was his appendix, mine was my colon. Living with this disease has been hard… going to infusions (IV medication) every 2 months dreading going, but after reading “Heaven is for Real” and hearing about Colton’s experience I’ve learned so much. This year has taught me so much already being diagnosed, but reading that has taught me the most. To not be afraid, and to see where life takes us. Colton is truly a blessing from God, and he cares so much about people. He loves his two sisters, and misses one dearly. My mom also lost a baby, matter of fact she lost 3, and I was born after them. My brother was born, then my mom had 3 miscarriages, and then I was born. I love how you guys say you have 4 children because you do and you are great parents and love your children deeply. I am now a family of 7, and have 4 siblings, 3 just happen to live in heaven and I cannot wait to meet them.

Na, I’m not buying it.
Jesus is God and God is very important.
One of the most ridiculous ones I heard was about this kid who says that God was hugging people in heaven, how ridiculous.I don’t buy it.
The kid Colton said he saw the virgin Mary in heaven,(By the way she eventualy lost her virginity) and she is like a mother to Jesus (That’s ridiculous). You guys need to realize that Jesus has been to every planet in the universe and on most of those planets He probably had a mother, so what about those other mothers of Jesus on those other planets that He has visited and blessed.
Finally, Jesus had blue-green eyes, what nonsense!!! Jesus was a Jew. I find it interesting that these accounts are coming from Europeans who are the ones that have green eyes and not ancient Jews who just like the Arabs are Semites. This seems more like wishful thinking to me rather than the truth.
Mary is the Perpetual Virgin. She never lost her virginity. She was taken body and soul into Heaven. Mary’s body was Holy since Jesus passed though it and wouldn’t be used for sex even after He was born. That’s why her body was taken to Heaven and not left on Earth, her body remained Holy and pure throughout her time on Earth.
That is not what Protestants believe. That is no where in the Bible, but it does say that Mary had future children. Plus,
Matthew 1:25. But he did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus.
This obviously shows she eventually had sex. That’s fine! That doesn’t mean she wasn’t holy, obviously she was the best woman (well, girl, she was likely 12 or 13) for the job. I don’t believe that Mary is Queen of heaven or anything crazy like that.
This is my only problem with the book, there have been near death experiences since the dawn of humankind. Let’s say you have 1000 people who died a minute or two and came back and they all have 1000 different stories. Each one says they saw their body and tell of things that happened here or there, that’s not too uncommon I have heard it before. They all go to heaven, and they all saw something different. Are they all right, or are they all wrong?
Well Allison, believe what you want. The Bible does not say Jesus had brothers born from Mary. Brothers in the Bible are also cousins. Mary did not have other children, nor did she have sex with her husband. Mary is the Queen of Heaven, and yes, I AM CATHOLIC.
I attend the Catholic daily mass preceded by a group Rosary, and I have no problem with Heaven is for real .

Dear Truth – Why are you so dismissive of what Jesus looks like? This is a little child’s account of what happened to him. Little children are very honest about things. Unless you have gone to Heaven and can speak with any authority on the matter, your views are just yours and yours alone. Noting that Jesus can’t have blue-green eyes because he was a Jew is preposterous. Next, you will say that blacks don’t have blue eyes. Which is not true either! Well, since Jesus was there BEFORE anything else, including the universe, I guess that gives him a little edge on things. Mary was a virgin when Jesus was born. Noting that Jesus had “other mothers on other planets” is your opinion only and is nowhere mentioned in the Bible. There was no human intercourse because Jesus is God in human form. Remember, you are putting human thought toward God’s wisdom and power. I too, have had an experience with a grandmother whom I’ve never met. Jesus’s main reason on earth was to save humankind. Christians are to spread “the good news”. The Bible tells us that LOVE is the most important thing, so it’s not at all surprising that people are hugging each other. Why would you think it’s ridiculous? The fact is, you haven’t experienced the love that Jesus has for you. I pray that you do find him in your heart.
Colton tells us what he saw…heaven like I want it to be. Why would a normal family lie about something so special. God lovingly answered Col tons dad Todd’s prayer! Also, coltons experience with his miscarried sister, whom they never met, lights hope for family’s that went threw a miscarriage. Every one of coltons explanation’s seem to be like we want them to be. God our father has a plan for us all, completely out of our hands. We should follow and love him until he decides its time for us to leave this world and join him and all the souls in heaven!

To “Truth” …Truth, you get two types of people…Sinners and Liars. I think you think you’re not a sinner…and if you think you’re not a liar, (Because you’re calling yourself “Truth”) you are in fact lying. I would suggest you change your name to Liar, then at least there will be SOME truth in you. Don’t worry, Jesus still loves you even if you think he has brown eyes. Doesn’t really matter…Now if that iritates you there is something even more wrong with you over and above being both a sinner and a liar. 🙂
I loved this book. Children are so honest in their reporting. A friend’s son had brain cancer at age 6 and lapsed into a coma after surgery. His mom sat beside his bed and called to him every day, he finally came out of the coma and told her about being with Jesus in Heaven. She asked him why he came back, and he replied “because you called me home Mama”. 30 years later the cancer returned and as he lay near death, his older sister said “please don’t call him home again Mom”. His mom said to him, “Jackie, go and be with Jesus”. He looked up at them and patted the side of his bed and said, “Mom, Jesus is right here”, and he slipped away. Knowing this child was an amazing experience. It is all about incredible love from our Father in Heaven, thru his Son to us, so that no matter how difficult this life is our future is with HIM, forever and ever, amen.
Hi! 🙂 I would just like you to know that this book made me cry a lot and it even gave me goosebumps because it made me realize all of my faults and just how weak I am. But thankfully, because of this book, I no longer have doubts. And I have to tell you, that I was very scared of dying before, but now, I have a new perspective, a better one. It made me very optimistic and I now have high hopes for every BELIEVER. This has got to be the best book that I have ever read! I love it, and I am going to share it with everyone! 🙂 This book has given me COURAGE and more FAITH than ever before. And I’m very thankful to you Colton for filling the gap in my life. Todd, I am a Christian and really enjoyed your story. I have one question. In chapter 26 Colton says there will be a war that will destroy the earth and he saw you fighting in it. Are you saying that the end of the world will be in your lifetime?
I just want Colton know that what he shared with us all in the book Heaven is Real helped my Dad to begin his journey with The Lord. My mother passed away 5 years before my father and he missed her greatly. Before my mom passed we had gotten several books that were written about their short visit to Heaven and what they could recall. My father read every book that we could find but none seemed to answer his questions of what Heaven was like till the day I found your book in the store. I truly believe that The Lord sent me to the book section for I don’t normally go there. I came across Heaven Is For Real and picked it up and read a little of the cover then placed it in my cart. When I went to my father’s house I gave him the book and he read it from cover to cover. After my Father read the book I noticed a Change in him. He told everyone he could about this wonderful book about this little pure at heart boy that passed over into Heaven but was then sent back to be The Lord’s Messenger to tell his people what Heaven is like. I feel that my father was afraid and had many questions that even the Bible couldn’t answer for him. It was two weeks after my father read your book that his journey ended here with us and his new Journey with The Lord began. This book is now being passed around to family members and friends that Want to read it. God Bless The Burpo Family for sharing Colton’s Story with us.

Jan, What I would do is pray for the truth. Being mean to him isn’t going to help him. I’m praying that God and Jesus shows him the love and heals him. I’m sure maybe something bad has happened to him or a loved one. He needs to find out if he lost a loved one and is hurting he will know that that person isn’t hurting anymore
As for Colton I loved the story and can’t wait for the movie. As soon as I seen the poster for the movie I cried. 11 years ago I had salmonella poison that my blood pressure dropped under 100 and I fell unconcious. While I was out I remember seeing a black hallway with a door at the end with a blinding light behind it and my grandfather who had passed 7 years before was standing in front of the door and wouldn’t let me pass and told me to go back. I saw the same thing as the movie poster but the door was smaller.

I think, however, we as Christians need to be careful to not jump on the bandwagon every time someone claims to have a supernatural experience. God tells us to test the spirits (1 John 4:1) by comparing such events with what his Word says. Did Colton really see heaven? I talk about that in my blog. I am reading the book now and am very moved by it. I do believe everything this young boy saw could certainly be true. We will definitely know when the time comes. Until that time we need to believe that there is a one true God, a Savior, and a heaven. Everything else will be taken care of as it is meant to be.
Young Burpo says he saw King David in heaven; however, the Bible says that King David has not ascended to the heavens. How do they explain this?
Where does it say David is not in heaven?
Acts 2:34, see also John 3:13 “No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven.”
Acts 2:34? 34 For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says,
‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
35 until I make your enemies your footstool.”’
He said that without having been to Heaven because he was a prophet and knew this from God ahead of time. Just because he knew and said that without having been to Heaven doesn’t mean he never went. And he wouldn’t have gone to Heaven before Jesus. No one did. He lived before Jesus so he wouldn’t have gone immediately when he died. He wouldn’t have gone to Heaven until after Jesus went.
I believe Colton. Nearly 50yrs ago when I was a second grade student in Catholic school, I had a very sweet Nun for my teacher. She spoke of Jesus often and one day we asked her what He looked like…she said” He’s nearly 6 ft tall and more fair, God did this so He would stand out. Jewish men were only about 5’5″ tall at that time and dark complected.” We were very quiet trying to picture who we were praying to all the time…we never thought to ask her how she knew but my best guess it was from people who had a NDE and returned to talk about it. The way Colton describes Mary is almost identical to St. Bernadette of Lourdes described Her…I just hope Colton draws a picture of Her too..God Bless.
Colton has said the closest representation is the one by the artist Akiane.
There was a series on the Biography Channel called “I Survived…Beyond and Back”…it was about people who had NDE and told virtually the same story that Colton has told..these are people from all walks of life who don’t know each other. When my sister was in her final stages of terminal cancer she had a difficult time accepting her fate…thank goodness that series was on then. We would watch that and talk about it..it helped her immensely. I was also a Registered Nurse who worked on a cardiac surgical floor at one time. We had patients who had NDE and spoke of the same thing Colton has but not as elaborate..I certainly believe in God and the Holy Family..all these people can’t be wrong.

He visto la pelicula y me ha impactado pues aunque no tengo duda de que Dios y Jesus estan en el cielo, que los angeles nos cuidan y que nuestros seres amados van a algun lugar…nunca he podido encontrar una explicacion a como sera eso luego de nuestra muerte. Creo que es maravilloso imaginar una vida asi, con ellos, incluso la Virgen a quien tanto quiero! Y mis familiares que ya partieron. My name is Erica Wilson irons from Phoenix Arizona I had a car that came into my home on July 30th 2011 and my grandmother was injured and my home I nearly almost died in my grandmother and now we are closed eyes who I feel that my godmother that have passed away before the accident has saved me along with God in heaven I am truly blessed for my family and my godmother and Godfather and truly will always understand the purpose of what I’m on this Earth for even though I truly miss her as well and also my god brother just passed away this year I will never understand the reason why people or that we love are no longer here with us but I do understand that God has a purpose for the event a reason why he did not have them served from the time that I had my godmother and from the time that have my god brother 4/15 years and I know that God put people in your life and your family and your relationship for that purpose I Know that heaven is real cuz I had a near-death experience from my accident I don’t know how to explain it either but it did happen to me and I know that God is real and Heaven is real and what I watch is heaven for real and I see the picture of how they show what God looks like that’s exactly what I will say he will look like as well too and for people out there than one Express their feelings and want to save me religious thing we wasn’t here a hundred years ago so you really can’t say what he looked like and what he did not look like God was always loved by everybody and he loved loved and he loved to be loved and to love other people of being loved when he built this Earth he did not build it with Hayes and all type of stuff evil
So much of this story seems true and believable, but I have a nagging issue. If anyone can respond with some truthful, biblical insight, please do. Akiane is not a Christian. Not even remotely. See her current work–it is very New Age and, quite honestly, looks influenced by the Deceiver. I have to wonder how on earth (or heaven) she had Christ reveal himself to her and then go so far astray?
This blog, though very long, has many quotes and information pieces about her. Her spiritual perspective is very off. I highly doubt that is what Christ looked like.

This is one blog but if you do some light surfing you will find she has a strong New Age bent.
I think someone can have a powerful encounter with Jesus that is real and authentic, yet still go astray or backslide, which happens to many.
I wonder if anyone can tell me the answer to my question; during one of colton’s interviews I thought I heard him say to the interviewer “there are dogs in heaven, cats too.” can anyone confirm this for me? I lost my spaniel, emma, 3 dys ago and it would truly give me confort if I knew she was waiting for me in heaven. thank you so much. God bless you all.
